Story Draft 1

Coming up with a story for the game, we were able to agree on some basic ideas to really start development.

We all agreed on having a hospital style setting with a character waking up in a warehouse where a monster would be trying to break in to get to the player. The players role would be to get away from the monster and attempt to figure out why he was there.

As a team we decided on a doctor as the main antagonist, the monster being the threat and that the character should be a young male who was taken in to hospital for appendicitis.

We agreed that the doctor should be an older man who would be the head surgeon with a lot of power within the hospital.

From this I created a rough story with some elements of the gameplay included.

Dr Bram a new and upcoming surgeon joins the army just after the second world war, still dealing with many injured soldiers in which the best tools and skills were unable to aid the suffering. During this time Dr Bram changed, he became colder, slightly less humane and understanding that things needed to change, there could not be another great war with so many casualties. The war would need to end faster with one side dominating the other.

He approached the army about taking some of the wounded soldiers, ones who were unlikely to survive for his experimentation's. His intention was to change them, morph their bodies with new abilities, extra speed, strength and no hesitation.

He was told no, that his ideas were inhumane and that he should drop the whole idea right away and move back home as a hero surgeon. He was told to move home and live comfortably however he knew he never could.

He moved into a hospital and due to his experience within the army he was able to save many people, however some of his methods lead to horrific life altering conditions. He was an expert in saving lives but not at improving them, after many meetings with the hospital he was taught the proper procedures on how to save lives and help the people, with this and his expertise on saving lives even in the most dire of situations he became a leading surgeon within the hospital.

10 years after starting at the hospital he became the head surgeon allowing him special privileges, for several years he had been working on plans and continuing his research into special enhanced humans. He was able to close off several wings of the hospital with his influence and begin building his own lair there, it was less than ideal as it was an old storage warehouse however it was where he managed to set up his own surgery, living quarters and other nefarious instruments.

The year is now 1967 and our protagonist a young man around the age of 21 enters the hospital with a horrific pain within the stomach, unsure on what the issue is (appendicitis) he passes out just before arriving at the hospital and can only remember waking up for brief periods.

He wakes up within an unusual looking surgery with the lights flickering and a storm raging outside, he looks around and can only hear worried screaming. “Oh god, how did you get out?! No not me! There is food in there, eat him and leave me!” It is at this point the protagonist realizes that he is in danger, when he wakes up from the bed he can see a monster dart across the window with nothing but a flash of light to illuminate the monster.

A creature previously human, but without any resemblance of humanity, disfigured with glowing red eyes and a mouth covered with a mask, making a terrible but soft pounding sound every few seconds. It was but a second, however even a second was enough to terrify the protagonist who leaps from the bed and into the warehouse looking for a door to escape.

He sees the shutter to the warehouse and as he begins to approach it he notices that it had fallen before, and there is a hand trying to pull it open, but it is no ordinary hand, the monster is stuck ... but wait, it isn’t stuck its pulling the door open, slowly but surely the shutter is being lifted, fog is pouring in from the outside and the occasional bolt of lightning is illuminating the outside world.

Now with the immediate danger the protagonist begins to flee towards the office door leading further within the warehouse, but its locked. In a hurry Dr Bram knocked some desks over and there he left a couple clues on a way to escape the monster before it’s too late.

After escaping the warehouse and entering the office side of the closed off building he begins to see drawings hung on the wall, framed with writing scribbled all over. They are notes taken on each new “specimen” and the features given to each of them. The enhancements and the unforeseen side effects they have all displayed. Upon breaking into the doctors office, the protagonist is able to find documents spanning years showing the steps the doctor had taken to proceed with his research in secret. He can also see all the awards the doctor has won and the special praise he has from the local community, he is a local hero saving people from the most severe situations of life and death.

The only thing he needed was a few participants to take part in his human experimentation however with so many letters from the army with constant rejection he began taking patients from the hospital, at first it was just ones who were sure to die, those who had no family and nobody to miss them. But now he has begun taking even those who could die, who have a chance. He can fake the death certificate and bring them to the warehouse for his own personal work.

It is at this point the character feels pain coming from his stomach and he is unsure why, but he knows he must leave and find help right away. He is unsure what is going on, but just before leaving the doctors office he finds his own file, he was taken to hospital with appendicitis and when he looks down he doesn’t have a scar.

He was not operated on, instead he was taken straight to the warehouse and time is running out. He escapes the warehouse and begins to run, hobbling forward finding it difficult to breathe until he reaches the main building, expecting another horrific place with perhaps more monsters but he needs medicine to stop the pain before he can find another hospital or help.

When he breaches through the doors he finds the hospital perfectly clean, well-lit and even warm, welcoming which is a stark contrast from the cold bitter outside he just ran through.

Asking a nurse for help, explaining he is soon to die unless he is put through surgery the nurse runs off and brings out their best surgeon, Dr Bram.

Demo ends.

I used this opportunity to characterise the doctor more than just a bad guy doing bad things for bad reasons, instead I wanted to make him a character with a purpose who was willing to make a hard choice. It's my personal belief that antagonists like this are always the best ones, a bad guy who believes that he is truly in the right even if what they are doing is wrong. Do the ends justify the means?

Of course after doing these bad things for so long he is a little lost and the meaning of others lives do not hold the same weight anymore.

Due to this being an early draft we do not have a name for the main character just yet and the name Dr Bram comes from the name Bram Stoker the author of Dracula.
