Graphics and Design

The art style that has been chosen for this game is realism, therefore creating assets that resemble real life objects and textures that look how they would feel is top of the priority list. The reason for choosing this art style is based on the game concept, creating an immersive horror experience. Therefore, this needs to have that realistic element to draw it back to real life, which in turn makes the game scarier as it relates to what you know in real life.

Throughout the environment (which will be shown in the level plan section below) there will be a wide range of assets which will have a variety of importance throughout the level. There will be high priority assets which will have the most attention throughout the project due to be a main vocal point of the level, puzzle piece or something that is always seen by the player. Whereas there will be ‘set dressing’ types of assets which are also important but will not need the same amount of time and planning put into them, due to being assets that are lying around the level such as bottles, needles, pipes, wires etc.

As well as looking at games for inspiration, real life structures were researched to gain accurate references. As stated in the concept, the theme for this project is in 1967, so a bit of reference hunting was needed to make sure the design of the game fits in with the time period. This was simply done by looking up multiple warehouse photographs that were captured in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Examples are shown below.

The reason for gathering reference from the 1960’s and 70’s is that the time of the game is 1967 so it is at an awkward period between the 2. You can see a clear difference between the 2 images such as the floor in the first being wooden planks and the second being cement. Even though there are differences the actual general idea such as the roof style stays the same. This gives us a bit of freedom in terms of using references from the 60’s and 70’s in case there is limited amount of references in the exact time period. It is also worth to note that both structures could also be different due to financial position of the company at that time.
