Accessibility

For this project the team agreed we wanted to put a good amount of focus on accessibility. As a collective we want everyone to be able to enjoy this experience and don’t want the hardware to restrict them from doing so. The main way we have thought to make this work is by implementing Virtual Reality (VR). The team potentially wants to implement VR regardless to make the narrative more immersive. (Rose, 2018)

With us wanting to implement VR we saw it as a very positive opportunity to improve accessibility to the game. If we was to implement VR, it could allow for those with limited or no movement ability to still be able to play – this means if someone was wheelchair bound and could not move their arms very far, but have access to head movement, they can wear the VR headset to look around and have single-hand controllers placed into the hands where all actions can be used meaning no arms movement is necessary such as reaching over a desk and moving a mouse. VR is used already very widely with aiding disabled individuals. A fantastic example of this is a company called ‘Embrace the Life VR’, this company is solely about using VR to give disabled individuals confidence with using public transport and day to day task that might seem hard – this is done through simulations where the person acts the scenario out, giving them confidence. (Life, 2018)

Carrying on from VR, another scenario we were eager to research was those who only have or access to one of their arms, this mainly came to the surface due to a friend of the team only has one arm, so we wanted to see what plan we can put in place to help with this. A really good idea looked at by W.P was instead of using full-set VR hardware such as an Oculus or a VIVE but instead using a cardboard VR headset which is much smaller and cheaper and instead of needed a powerful PC to run only requires a mobile phone. The reason why this can be a solution for those to who can’t use one of their arms is that the carboard VR only has a singular button which means all actions can be carried out through that. Seeing as we would need to make another version of the game to be built to mobile, changing some of the control scheme would not be that much of an issue such as holding the button down to move around and clicking it to pick an item up or opening a door.
